Combiend with the Addonics adapter Toshiba 1.8 Zif 2.5 Ide Connector this SSD fits nicely into your X40 / X41 but you’ll have to remove the keyboard and palmrest to reliably fit it.
Assuming you’re the worldwide wizard with tweezers and needle nose pliers…. you could slip it into place conventionally as if you were trying to insert the included Hitachi but it is unlikely and you’ll waste more time and tooth enamel doing so than just using a phillips head and dropping all 18 Thinkpad screws from the bottom and removing the top deck to expose the palm rest and drive bay.
It will be a cleaner easier installation and you could benefit from downloading IBM’s free Hardware Maintenance Manuals with end user instructions on the process including excessive details to disassemble your X4x to the last part if you had some reason to.

I received the Sabertooth Z SSD and installed it on my Lenovo U110. According to the manufacturer’s website, this SSD should be compatible with that laptop, but it did not work.
Finally I returned it and tried the AMP Sabertooth ZX AMP 32GB SaberTooth ZX 1.8-inch 5mm 40-pin IDE PATA ZIF SSD solid state drive upgradeand this model worked well on my Lenovo U110.
The customer service by AMP and Amazon was great, this is why I am giving 4 stars to the product (the missing star is for the mistake on AMP’s website stating that Sabertooth Z works on Lenovo U110)
